Ending Support for McAfee Products on University Computers

If your University computer or device is using McAfee antivirus or encryption software, you need to switch to a new solution by the end of 2016.  Effective January 1, 2017, the University of Illinois will no longer support McAfee antivirus software, full disk encryption software, or the ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO).

McAfee ePO centrally manages McAfee software in a given environment. It’s the brain that controls all McAfee software installed on University machines, including new releases, updates, and bug fixes.

After January 1, 2017, McAfee software already installed on University computers will continue to work. However, it will not receive software updates or bug fixes, which will leave University computers  vulnerable to attack.

Other popular antivirus software like Malwarebytes will not be affected by this change, and will continue to receive updates.

What you can do

Department

If your department uses McAfee, please consult with your local IT staff to facilitate choosing new antivirus and encryption software that is supported by the University. There are several options available, depending upon your platform.

Before installing one of the new antivirus or encryption products below, an IT pro will need to completely uninstall all McAfee products and stop managing the device from within McAfee ePO.  For more information on how to do this, please refer to https://answers.uillinois.edu/illinois/page.php?id=68048.

If you are using the personal version of McAfee antivirus for Windows or Mac that was obtained from the WebStore, you can continue to use the software on your current system without problem.

However, if you use Windows 10 or if you upgrade to the newest version of your operating system, McAfee antivirus will no longer work properly.

As such, please use another antivirus solution. You can find a list of other options at: https://answers.uillinois.edu/illinois/page.php?id=67971.
