QuickTime for Windows Blocked on May 23

Technology Services has information about a security issue that may affect faculty, staff, and students.

Beginning May 23, QuickTime for Windows will no longer work on Windows computers joined to the UOFI Active Directory. All customers who use QuickTime for Windows should use alternatives like Windows Media Player.

Apple has confirmed that it will no longer fix security issues in QuickTime for Windows. The lack of security updates means that computers continuing to run QuickTime for Windows will become vulnerable to attacks.

On May 23, our IT professionals will disable the ability to run this software on Windows computers joined to UOFI Active Directory. If someone tries to open a file with QuickTime for Windows, they will receive an error message informing them that the program is blocked.

Technology Services advises that customers ask their IT professionals to remove QuickTime for Windows from their computers, or remove the program themselves. We also recommend removing QuickTime for Windows from personal machines. Please use alternatives like Windows Media Player to play media.
