Why to use this service

Blackboard Collaborate is integrated into campus Learning Management Systems such as Illinois Compass or Moodle to facilitate synchronous online classes. It is already the backbone of many online degree programs on campus. It can also be used to supplement traditional courses by offering a convenient way to deliver lectures or office hours from a remote location.

How to get this service

It is integrated into campus LMSs: Moodle and Compass 2g. Moodle is provided by ATLAS and the iSchool. Tech Services provides Blackboard Collaborate to owners of Compass 2g spaces. Students, Faculty, and Staff can request a Compass 2g space from the Compass Space Request Application: Once the course is created then Blackboard Collaborate can be configured and used.

How to use this service

Blackboard Collaborate “Classic” is used via a Java plugin installed prior to joining a session. Installation instructions and a link to the Collaborate Launcher is provided from the LMS. Blackboard Collaborate “Ultra” is used via a web browser. Blackboard Collaborate Ultra can be used via the Bb Student Mobile App (iOS/Android). There is a Blackboard Collaborate app for connecting to Blackboard Collaborate “Classic” sessions (iOS/Android). There are telephony options for both Collaborate offerings.

Quotas and usage restrictions

For Blackboard Collaborate Ultra there is a 250 participant limit per session. A Moderator or presenter can upload GIF, JPEG and PNG images, PDF files, or PowerPoint presentations of up to 60MB to present to participants. The Application and Desktop Sharing feature can only be launched via the Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers.

For Blackboard Collaborate Classic there is a 1000 participant limit. Sessions larger than 500 participants need to be scheduled 72 business hours prior via a ticket to the vendor. There is 20MB size limit for sharing Powerpoint slides.
