Set up 2FA to get your W-2


If you are a University of Illinois employee there's something important you need to know ahead of tax season.

In order to help protect valuable data like your electronic tax statements or your direct deposit information, the University of Illinois has put additional security measures in place this year to keep off-campus hackers and attackers from ripping you off. This new security measure is called 2 Factor Authentication (2FA).

You will need to use 2FA any time that you are off of the campus network and want to access your electronic tax statements (W-2, 1042-S, 1095-C) or change your direct deposit information. You will not be able to access these resources from off campus without 2FA. 

If you have not yet set up 2FA, you will need to do so from a computer that is on the campus network before you can access your tax statements. Once you are using a computer on the campus network, you can visit https://verify.uillinois.edu/ and click on the Get Started button. The instructions on the UI Verify site will walk you through the process of setting up 2FA.

Once you have set up 2FA, you will be able to access your tax statements from off campus.

You still can access your tax statements from on the campus network without 2FA.

What is 2FA and why do I need it?

Passwords are commonly stolen or cracked by hackers and thieves. With your University of Illinois password and no additional protections, thieves would be able to do things like change your direct deposit information or steal your personal data. Tax and payroll information are common high-value targets from hackers who attack the University of Illinois from around the world.

2FA creates an additional layer of protection by requiring anyone trying to log in as you from off campus to also verify that they are you by providing information sent to your smartphone. Google, Facebook, and many banks and credit card services have already implemented their own two-factor authentication systems.
