The Technology Behind Dial-A-Carol

With finals week in full gear, and winter break right around the corner, it’s safe to say that everyone on campus could use a little joy right now. With that in mind, what better way to get a dose of the holiday season than Dial-A-Carol?

Starting December 8, Dial-A-Carol will be open for business. Dial-A-Carol is a student- and volunteer-run organization through Snyder Hall Council that allows anyone to call in from anywhere in the world and have a carol sung to them by the volunteers. The program is 24/7 and runs until December 14.

Amelia Barron, a junior in Animal Sciences, is volunteering this year as a caroler. She notes that the program is a holiday tradition for many students, faculty, and staff, and its popularity is continuing to grow. Volunteers are expecting a sharp increase in expected calls in comparison to last year. “There were about twenty people last year, but this year we’ll have ten phone lines, so there will be a lot more people,” she said.

This year, Dial-A-Carol is using Skype for Business to handle calls. Skype for Business is a phone service provided to the University of Illinois by Technology Services that supports both audio and video calls. It can be used with desktops, laptops, and mobile computers. There’s no need for physical phones, but Skype for Business can be used along with physical phones as well.

Dial-A-Carol volunteers will be using only the audio capabilities.
