Record-breaking enrollment shapes fall 2024 first-week metrics

Our fall 2024 numbers: record-breaking. This year, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign welcomed a record-breaking number of 59,238 students online and in-person. With increased enrollment, the usage of our services during the first week of classes has also reached unprecedented levels, impacting our start-of-the-semester metrics for this fall. The year-over-year growth of our IT services speaks to the reliance that the community places on us as a trusted partner. 

At Technology Services, we strive to connect people and technology to help Illinois and our partners thrive. As the IT service arm of the Office of the Chief Information Officer, we proudly support the learning, discovery, engagement and economic development mission of the university.  

This year's record highs

Wi-Fi data usage

Wi-Fi data usage peak data rate and peak data usage per day from 2019-2024 shown in this graph. Note the significant upwards trend of peak data usage per day from 2021 (68.81 Gbps) to 2024 (298.4 Gbps). In addition, nearly 350 TB of data traversed the Wi-Fi network daily.

Cloud (data) storage

U of I Box and Google Apps at Illinois have been on a significant upward trend since 2019. 

Media Space

Media Space had a lot of activity in 2020 due to COVID-19 and remote learning. Accordingly, it went on a slight decline in 2021 as students returned to in-person learning. After that, specifically the number of media/entries played has been on an upward trend. The number of viewers has been increasing since 2023. 

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams usage from 2020 to 2024 includes an increase from 3,000 chat messages to around 612,000, and person-to-person calls increased from 0 to around 44,000 in 2024.

Canvas is the university-supported learning management system.

Email

Campus Email offers every student, faculty and staff an inbox via Microsoft 365 using each person’s NetID for a unique address.

Technology Services’ permanent Help Desks are located in the Digital Computer Lab and Illini Union.

Media Space

Illinois Media Space is a media hosting platform (like YouTube) that allows students, faculty and staff to share multimedia in a secure environment. Illinois Media Space is integrated with Canvas, allowing you to use the same interface and see media you own across campus platforms.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is the university’s primary collaboration platform that supports threaded, persistent conversations, instant messaging, file storage, and audio and video conferencing. 

Zoom is an essential tool used across the university that facilitates audio/video conferencing and collaboration.
