Ginger Hundgen behind the screens: Adapting and figuring it out

Author: Melissa Sanchez
Melissa is a student employee with Technology Services and is a senior at Illinois majoring in Communications.

Ginger has spent her time as lead business process improvement analyst finding new ways for Technology Services and the university to run smoother and more efficiently. When she’s not working, establishing Koi ponds or spending time with her two kids, Ginger volunteers her time reviewing resumes for the Women in Technology Group on campus.

Describe your role in Tech Services.

The university has a lot of complicated processes, some of which aren’t really needed. I help teams figure out what they can make easier and give them the tools and support to do it.

If we find ways to do things quicker, faster, adding more value in Tech Services, we should share those solutions with the campus, as they likely face the same challenges.

What's the best thing about your current role?

I work with people who have diverse communication and problem-solving styles, which keeps me adapting, learning and solving new challenges—never a dull moment.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work from home, starting with coffee before jumping into meetings. I often manage multiple efforts with various stakeholders, so I schedule weekly check-ins to maintain momentum. In between, I set aside time to think and digest the information I absorb each day.

Can you describe some of the work you do with resumes through WIT?

I offer free resume reviews through the Women in Technology program, though the service is open to all. People can sign up for a session via my calendar on the WIT Resume Review page. I love helping individuals refine their resumes and discuss career goals, especially when they’re pursuing new opportunities. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them achieve success in real time.

What's one piece of insight about technologoy you've learned?

AI is my best friend. I was part of the Microsoft Copilot pilot program, and it changed my work life. At first, I used it to take notes and jot down action items. Now I use it to help me think through complex problems and train myself on new tech tools.

I am an expert in...

Figuring it out. I have been in numerous rooms with people smarter than me or more experienced, but I have never backed down from a challenge and miraculously always “figure out” whatever I am trying to accomplish.

What’s one hobby you have outside of work?

I am an avid gardener and cannot wait for spring!
