Start of Semester Technology FAQ – Students

Below are updates for Fall 2021 and answers to common questions we see from students at the beginning of each semester.

On your device, look for “IllinoisNet” in your wireless network list. Use your NetID and password to sign in.

You will NOT see your Canvas or Compass course until rosters are loaded on the evening of August 19, 2021.

After August 20, if you still do not see your course, the following reasons may apply:

  • Your instructor may still be finalizing content and you may not see anything until your course meets for the first time.
  • If you added a new course after August 20, your instructor may need to manually add you to the roster before your course shows up.
  • Your instructor may be using another learning management system.

Once your vaccination has completed verification by the university, records can take 12-24 hours to appear in the Safer Illinois app. If your status still hasn’t updated, please follow these steps before reaching out to

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is required for all Illinois graduate and professional students.

Follow the steps in this article to register a device for 2FA.

  • Launch the Zoom desktop or mobile client
